Stop and Savor: John 14:23
“Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”
Read this verse out loud slowly. Sit quietly for at least one minute and ask God to speak to you through it.
Read it again in your head and sit quietly, noticing which word or phrase jumps out at you the most.
Read it a third time and ask the Holy Spirit what He is inviting you to through this verse.
Picture God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit walking up to your house and knocking on the door. When you open the door, God comes in and makes Himself at home there. What does that look like? How is He at home in you? He’s not just stopping in for a visit. He is with you as at His home!
The only other time this word for home is used in the Bible is in John 14:2 where Jesus tells His disciples, “In my Father's house are many rooms (homes). If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?”
How does this enhance your understanding of God making His home in you?
John Piper (desiringgod.org, 6/2/2012) says that Jesus, speaking for the Father and Holy Spirit also, is saying to us, “We have prepared a dwelling for you in heaven. We are that dwelling. And if you have Me and keep My word, We will come and be that dwelling for you now.’”
Invite Jesus to help you open the door to your heart and life.
